Sikorsky S-38 Osa's Ark"the flying yacht"The first flying boat created by Igor Sikorsky of Sikorsky Aircraft in 1928. A total of 110 were produced for adventure seekers and fledging airline companies. Chalks Airlines, Inter-Island Airways which is now known as Hawaiian Airlines began 75 years ago with 2 of these aircraft. Pan American World Airways flew the S-38 on flights from New York to Santiago, Chile. Charles Lindbergh surveyed South America and Pacific Ocean routes for Pan Am opening routes from Miami to Rio de Janeiro and Miami to Panama flying this incredible aircraft.Osa's Ark is the replica of Martin and Osa Johnson's 1928 S-38 Amphibious Sikorsky Aircraft. During the mid-30's this adventurous couple shipped the S-38 and a S-39(a single engine painted like a giraffe) to Cape Town. Flying over 60,000 miles they took thousands of pictures and made the first documentaries of African natives and wildlife. The Johnson's even filmed a blockbuster hit "Baboona". The paint schemes were chosen in hopes the natives would not be frightened.Construction began on this plane in the year 2000, after more than 40,000 man hours it was completed in 2002. The upper wing and two tail booms are origional parts the rest was handcrafted from Sikorsky plans. Today Osa's Ark is the only S-38 flying in the world. It has traveled extensively throughout the United States and began a World Tour August 21, 2010 traveling the northern route departing Minnesota and arriving Frankfurt,Germany August 30th. Osa's Ark will remain in Europe for another winter before continuing the journey.
